Books

A storefront for ebooks and audiobooks, with your own private library, no account or subscription required.

The Books library as a kid sees it

Overview

Books shelves anything you’d actually read cover to cover: novels, classics, textbooks, manuals, comics, and magazines. Looking for a dictionary, an encyclopedia, or a quick lookup instead? That’s Reference.

Where books come from

Browse and search across several sources at once:

  • Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks for public-domain classics
  • Internet Archive and LibriVox for audiobooks
  • Wikisource and other reference-style book packs
  • Any self-hosted library your admin connects (Calibre-Web, Kavita, and similar)
  • Your own uploads (EPUB, PDF, CBZ/CBR comics)

Save vs. Download

A book can be in your library two ways:

  • Save just remembers you’re interested, no file is downloaded yet.
  • Download pulls the actual book (or audiobook) onto your server so it opens instantly and works with no internet at all.

You can switch a saved title to a full download at any time from its detail page.

Reading and Listening

Ebooks open in a clean, distraction-free reader with adjustable text size and your progress saved automatically. Comics get a dedicated page-by-page viewer. Audiobooks play with chapters, a normal scrub bar, and resume exactly where you left off.

Don’t have narrated audio for something? Ask for text-to-speech and Books will read it aloud in a voice you choose, turning any ebook into an audiobook.

Magazines

Browse current and back issues across a set of built-in categories, from tech to gaming, read straight in the app.

Write Your Own Book

Books includes an AI authoring tool: describe a premise, genre, and length, and your companion drafts an original book with you, one step at a time:

  1. It proposes a story bible, characters, setting, tone, and themes, for you to review and edit.
  2. It writes a sample chapter so you can confirm the voice feels right before committing to the whole thing.
  3. It generates the rest chapter by chapter, keeping track of continuity as the story goes.

You can also point it at a book already in your library and ask it to continue the story or reshape it (a different ending, a new POV, and so on). Nothing is added to your library until you approve the finished draft.

Admin

Your admin can add self-hosted library sources and API keys for extra metadata lookups under Admin → Integrations → Books.
