Today

The Home page is where you land. It is your “Today” dashboard: a friendly glance at what is going on in the world and around you, arranged the way you like it. A welcome line greets you at the top, with the weather and a joke close by, and below that a grid of cards you can rearrange.

The Top of the Page

The header is the part that is always there:

• Weather: the current temperature and conditions for your location, with a small moon at night. When you are away from home, it quietly switches to the weather where you actually are, and back again when you return.
• A joke: one fresh joke a day, tucked under the greeting.
• A sports ticker: a slim scrolling bar of today’s games and scores.

You can turn any of these three off if you would rather not see them.

Just under the header you also get a couple of quick reads pulled in automatically: a top local headline and a top world headline, and a small “On This Day” card with a moment from history that happened on today’s date.

Explore

Under that is a row of five tiles: Watch & Listen, Read, Create, Around the House, and Everyday. Tap one to see everything of that kind, so you can find your way around without knowing what any of the apps are called yet. Each tile shows how many apps are inside. “All apps” at the end of the row opens the full list.

The Cards

Below the header is your canvas: a grid of widgets you can add, remove, and rearrange.

Until you arrange it yourself, the cards follow the order of your favourites in the side menu, so dragging a favourite into place sorts your Home at the same time. Once you rearrange the cards yourself, they stay exactly where you put them and your favourites no longer move them.

The available cards are:

• Weather: current conditions, the “feels like” temperature, and the day’s high and low.
• News: the latest local and global headlines.
• Scores: today’s games and live scores.
• On This Day: a notable event from history on today’s date.
• Joke of the Day: a fresh laugh.

Tap a card to open its full page, where there is a lot more to explore (a seven-day forecast, the full news list, every game by league, and so on).

Making It Yours

Hit Edit in the top corner to rearrange your dashboard:

• Drag a card to move it.
• Pair two cards side by side by dropping one onto the other.
• Make a card full width with the expand button.
• Remove a card with its X.
• Add a card from the gallery, which only ever shows cards that are actually available to you.

When you are done, your layout is saved to your account, so it follows you on any device. If you do not like a change, just cancel before saving.

A family admin can set the starting layout everyone gets, and can lock a specific person’s layout so it cannot be changed (handy for keeping a kid’s home screen simple). If your layout is locked, the Edit button simply will not appear.

A Sense of the Day for Your Companion

Behind the scenes, your companion quietly keeps a light awareness of the day: the weather where you are, a bit of local and world news, today’s scores, what is happening in history, and any holidays. This is the same “daily briefing” that feeds the dashboard.

Your companion does not recite any of this at you. It just has it on hand, so if you ask “should I bring an umbrella?” or “anything going on in town this weekend?” the answer already fits your day. It stays brief and natural, and it never brings the news up out of nowhere.

If you have turned on offline mode, none of this ambient context is fetched, and your companion simply will not have it.

A Note on the Internet

Most of what the dashboard shows comes from the internet, so it needs a connection to be current: the weather, news, scores, history, jokes, holidays, and local events all fetch fresh data. A couple of things work entirely offline (the moon phase, for one, is pure math). When you are offline, those cards politely say so rather than showing stale information.
